Good thing that Graham had the longest distance yesterday considering he wasn’t able to finish the entire effort due to an incident about 9 min 30 sec into the 10 min effort (see video below). Looking forward to many, many efforts in the next couple of weeks!

The Roller Race is back at Contender
The 2010 installment of the Club Roller Race is hitting the pavement Feb. 1. What is it you ask? It’s only the greatest test of balance, effort, and tenacity you can find. All this while you’re having fun of course.
Here’s how it works.
Open to all cyclists who like a challenge.
You’ve got 10 minutes on the rollers to cover as much distance as humanly possible. We’ll provide the rollers and the computer to calculate the distance.
You can attempt your ten minute record as many times as you like within Feb 1-14. Your greatest distance will be counted. The best part about the roller race is every participant has a chance at winning the grand prize. Here’s why. Winner will be determined by lottery. The rider who covers the most distance will have the most tickets in the proverbial helmet. As an added bonus club members will automatically receive one additional ticket. Also for each additional attempt you make on the rollers you will receive one more ticket. So there are lots of chances to win. Example below
1st- 20 tickets
2nd- 18 tickets
3rd- 16 tickets
etc.
Don’t know how to ride rollers? Here’s your chance. We had several first timers last time who came in to try them out before hand.
Here’s how you get in. Contact me at Contender (801 364 0344) or send me an email so we can reserve your time.

Contender Cyclocross Skills Clinic
Here is the info for the Contender Cyclocross Skills Clinic led by Darrell Davis (Dr. Cross)!!! Held under U.S.A. Cycling permit #2009-2736.
Contender Cyclocross Skills Clinic
Thursdays, beginning Sept 24, 5:30-7:30 pm, until Nov. 19 (9 weeks total).
November clinics start at 4:00 pm
Location: Sugarhouse Park, Salt Lake City. 2100 S. 1500 E.
Schedule: Meet at the NW Corner of the Park.
Barrier Practice for 30-60 minutes, followed by laps around the park perimeter.
All-inclusive Fees for the entire 9 weeks:
• USA Cycling License Holders: $5
• Non-licensed Riders $25
• Registration online at Sportsbaseonline.com ONLY. You must register!
Fine Print: Fees partially cover the cost of the permit, insurance for USA Cycling members($1/rider/day), and the $5/day/rider one-day license fee for non-licensed riders. Do the math. No extra charges, no refunds, no profit.
Riders must sign in each week.
Goals: Learn something about cyclocross techniques; how to go over barriers, run up hills, and ride a skinny-tired bike off the pavement. Selfprofessed expert crossers will conduct the clinics and distribute nuggets of wisdom. Cyclocross and/or Mountain Bikes are welcome. Be cool, sell your capri pants and your fixie, and buy a ‘cross bike.
Rules: Bikes are absolutely prohibited off-pavement anytime except during the clinic! Violation will result in us losing use of the Park. This is a promise. Do not ride on the grass except for Thursdays, during the clinic. Clinic participants are expected to police themselves and their colleagues.

Minimizing conflict with other park users. The time of the clinic is one of the heaviest used times by runners, and runners use the same perimeter trail as for the cyclocross clinic. We must minimize conflicts with runners . First, the cyclists have to be aware of the requirement to be good citizens, second, the cyclists will give the rightaway to runners on the trail, and third, there will be signs at strategic positions around the Park notifying the other Park users that there is an official cycling event taking place.
What does this mean to you, the bike rider? Don’t annoy the runners! If there is some encounter, apologize. Give them a wide berth and politely announce your presence.
Don’t ride your bike around Sugarhouse Park outside the clinic times. If you see someone else doing this, explain to them the ramifications of their actions. We had to jump through a bunch of hoops to put this together, and minor infractions could cause us to permanently lose the Park.
Wow…..$15,000!

Also a special thanks to professional cyclists, Jeffrey Louder and David Zabriskie, for wearing UV dosimeters throughout the week! They were very generous to speak with the press and help us raise awareness! Our efforts were featured with news stories on Fox13, KSL, KSLradio, and The Deseret News among others! Also thank you to Fatty for posting our efforts on www.fatcyclist.com.
Club members successfully passed out a ton of sun screen samples and literature on skin cancer awareness at the prologue and Stage 1 of the Tour of Utah! The week ended with the 1000 Warriors. Congratulations to Chris Hull for placing 3rd in the Pro,1,2,3 field and congratulations to all of the club members that rode in the event.
We will post the final update next week!
Cycling Sombrero
Here is a quote from the interviewer!
“Both doctors were clearly practicing what they preach, Dr. Hadley was wearing sunscreen and Dr. Hull had on a large “cycling sombrero” that rivaled some of the vendor’s shade tents. Dr. Hull was anything but frail and nerdy though, with calves that had clearly logged tens of thousands of miles in the saddle.”
